Why does the algo hate me?

Low impressions everywhere

Hey everyone!

It’s me, Dana - your LinkedIn data fellow, who tries to share valuable LinkedIn insights with you.

This week’s issue will cover a highly requested topic:

Why are impressions so low?

Let’s get into this, shall we?

Reasons behind low impressions

No one has really cracked the algorithm yet, but there are things we do know. Firstly, LinkedIn has been reducing organic reach for quite a while now. Last year, getting 5,000K impressions on a mediocre post was a piece of cake.

However, we can’t always justify ourselves with the good old algo, can we?

Here’s a full list of all the possible reasons why your impressions are low:

1. Your content is bad

I’m sorry, but if your content isn’t both clear AND clever, it’s your fault no one is reading it. There are only 3 rules you need to know:

  • If you can say it with 3 words instead of 10, always say it with 3 words

  • If you’ve got nothing to say, don’t post

  • If your partner/best friend can’t make it to the end of the post you need a copywriting bootcamp

2. You don’t spend enough time on the platform

Most people still think it’s all about content, content, content.

It’s not.

Engaging with people and bringing this to DMs and calls is about 9x more important.

And by the way, have you noticed how you see some people in your feed all the time? It’s because you comment on their posts, they comment on yours or you DM often. Use this knowledge to your advantage.

You don’t have to post every day, but you have to be online every day.

It’s social media - you pay either with money for ads or with your time.

3. Your network is not optimized for social media

You know that guy whom you connected to 10 years ago because you worked together for a week?

Him and other such people are what’s severely impacting your impressions.

I sound like a broken record at this point, but:

Every social media algorithm distributes your content by the ratio of active connections to inactive connections. How many of your connections react to your post when it comes out affects how much the algorithm will push it.

More active connections = more reach.

4. You’re shadow banned and you don’t know it

Go to Creator Tools. If you don’t see a green tick “Available” for every one of them, and especially next to the Follow link - congrats, you’re shadow-banned.

This has been happening a lot recently. The reason behind it is unknown.

What should you do if you’re shadow-banned?

I can only tell you what my plan is:

  • Go all in into DMs - they can’t control my reach there

  • Start posting more images to get more pairs of eyes

  • Move most of my actual helpful content to this newsletter

  • Think of expanding to a new channel

Lastly, should you care much about impressions?

I’d say, yes. They’re an important metric for distribution. And distribution is important. But the more time passes, the more we should keep in mind LinkedIn is headed in the same direction as Facebook, Instagram and the other giants, where organic reach is pretty much impossible to get anymore.

Until then, think about how not to lay all your eggs in the LinkedIn basket.

Something exciting:
